Biodiversity in the Courtenay River Estuary

Check out this video clip from Project Watershed’s YouTube channel – all about biodiversity in the Courtenay River Estuary. You know that place where folks go kayaking/eagle watching/dancing in the mud/celebrate anniversaries etc.

Kudos to our friends at Shaw for sharing this footage. It is this kind of collaboration that can help us continue to build the Comox Valley’s growing online community.

Vancouver Island MusicFest 2010

Armed with backstage passes, newly printed T-shirts and 2 working laptops CP-SMS rolled into this year’s Vancouver Island MusicFest to try and capture some commentary from performers, crew and volunteers as part of the media crew. The idea of having real-time commentary from the festival posted to YouTube was an exciting opportunity to gain some further experience with this particular social media element, content for our channel and to be involved with a Comox Valley event as fun and funky as MusicFest.

Here is one of our favourite clips from the day:

Visit the CP-SMS YouTube channel to see more of the same. (You can also click the link in the sidebar.)

One of the best aspects of the festival, apart from amazing acts like Joan Osborne and the group of performers that presented Human Voices on the Grierson Stage, is the people you meet. CP-SMS was very impressed with the efforts of photographers Ron Pogue (have a look at his album on Facebook) and Sarah Kerr (see her album on Facebook).

It was nice to run into Erin Haluschak, Comox Valley record photographer and reporter, as well. Have a look at some of the pics she images she managed to capture this past weekend:

See more of Erin’s work on her website.

Big thanks to the Comox Valley Kickers for stepping up and taking care of campground security. Looking forward to being more involved with the team and the stuff they get up to.

Wish there was more time to spend with Jade De Trey of Methuselah (www.dancwithjade.ca) but it was a fitting end to a spectacular festival to do some lush lounging with Miss Christina and Robin, who dances with her in the group. Thanks ladies.

Lastly, thanks to Meaghan Cursons, Bethany Scott, Sue Moen and the rest of the people who worked to so hard to make it such a success

Looking forward to Vancouver Island MusicFest 2011 already!

This day in history!

In case you weren’t aware yet…

Today is the day that Marty McFly arrived in the future after hitting 88mph in a pimped out Delorean in 1985. The only question is, where is my hover skateboard?

Thanks to my brother Jan-Hendrik for this magic memorabilia!

VIMF tickets for sale at The Broken Spoke at 50% Community Way!

These are announcements from Michael Linton (open money development group):

  1. There are a (small) number of Music Fest tickets available for cw$75 + $75 (+ tax) at the Broken Spoke Coffee House (871 2229). So please don’t miss a great event if you really want to be there and have cw$ to spend.    Policy is a maximum of 2 tickets per business on the first pass, and while there may be more later, it’s more likely not, so get your call in now if you want some.
  2. We are going to call each of you – the underwriting businesses of thecommunity way program - to ask for a meeting of perhaps 30 minutes or less, hopefully sometime in the next few weeks, preferably in person, but perhaps by phone if that’s more convenient.

It is now almost a year since the Comox Valley community way was  launched, and now we want to meet each of you individually to exchange information on this first year’s experience – what’s working / not working etc etc – and to review current and imminent options.  We want to hear what you have to say, and we want you to know what’s in planning.  You might find a moment to review thischart and perhaps check on your on-line account – but this is not urgent and will be covered in any meeting.

While these meetings aren’t in any way essential, they are very much recommended.  There are good reasons to predict considerably more activity in the coming year than the last, and it pays to be prepared.  Besides, as part of the introduction process covered by your cw$ registration fees, you already paid for this meeting, so there’s no cost like that – it’s only a matter of your time.

So this (email) is your notification that someone (probably me) will be calling soon, hoping to find a convenient time to talk, and to listen, at more length.

Read this on the Community Way website.

the bean: estuary rant

“When the rains fall hard and heavy I dream they discharge the dog shit, in those cute little compost-able bags, into the estuary at last, ’cause the shit stink sure is overpowering on a beautiful, warm sunny day. Isn’t that why people throw it toward the estuary water, isn’t that their hope/assumption? That it will sink down and away? Enough wrist action, it might hit water, or maybe just mud, rock, wood, brambles; but once it leaves the hand it is away. Even though we are all so fucking sophisticated that we know there really is no such place as away. It’s the best we can do I suppose, in this pinnacle of civilization, this Comox Valley hopping as it is with social media, and the 3C cool factor of Cumberland/Courtenay/Comox. We trail after our pampered pooches, harvesting their precious feces to keep the walkways clean, but do we bury it? Do we compost it? No. We’ll protest development along the shoreline, protest a gas station on the dyke, but in the end it all comes down to the same thing, throwing our unwanted shit in the water.”
From Jean Dugal. (Fellow contributor @ the Island Word)
PS: In the spirit of keeping things hyperlocal, CP-SMS will be asking like-minded community members to submit their 2 cents.

Willingness to accept cw$ could open discussions for payment.
