Vancouver Island MusicFest 2010
Posted by admin in Comox Valley, Social Media Solutions, VIMF on 12/07/2010
Armed with backstage passes, newly printed T-shirts and 2 working laptops CP-SMS rolled into this year’s Vancouver Island MusicFest to try and capture some commentary from performers, crew and volunteers as part of the media crew. The idea of having real-time commentary from the festival posted to YouTube was an exciting opportunity to gain some further experience with this particular social media element, content for our channel and to be involved with a Comox Valley event as fun and funky as MusicFest.
Here is one of our favourite clips from the day:
Visit the CP-SMS YouTube channel to see more of the same. (You can also click the link in the sidebar.)
One of the best aspects of the festival, apart from amazing acts like Joan Osborne and the group of performers that presented Human Voices on the Grierson Stage, is the people you meet. CP-SMS was very impressed with the efforts of photographers Ron Pogue (have a look at his album on Facebook) and Sarah Kerr (see her album on Facebook).
It was nice to run into Erin Haluschak, Comox Valley record photographer and reporter, as well. Have a look at some of the pics she images she managed to capture this past weekend:
See more of Erin’s work on her website.
Big thanks to the Comox Valley Kickers for stepping up and taking care of campground security. Looking forward to being more involved with the team and the stuff they get up to.
Wish there was more time to spend with Jade De Trey of Methuselah (www.dancwithjade.ca) but it was a fitting end to a spectacular festival to do some lush lounging with Miss Christina and Robin, who dances with her in the group. Thanks ladies.
Lastly, thanks to Meaghan Cursons, Bethany Scott, Sue Moen and the rest of the people who worked to so hard to make it such a success
Looking forward to Vancouver Island MusicFest 2011 already!

the bean: farmers market & brambles
Posted by admin in Comox Valley, Social Media Solutions, cw$ on 30/05/2010
“I love the Farmer’s Market; I love Brambles Market; I’m aflutter that we have both rural and urban gorgeous foodie markets in the Comox Valley. The Farmer’s Market is great fun, doing the circuit around the field, paying farmers directly for what they’ve produced, trying not to trip over kids and dogs, everyone happy.
A magnet for people from Cumberland and Comox and around the Valley, it’s old school social media, face to smiling face.
The downside is that it’s day and time limited, and what if I don’t want an experience. Maybe all I need is a quick stop for lettuce, bread and something for supper?
Brambles Market in downtown Courtenay is hip and urban. A local-centric alternative to the chain stores. For all its cutting edge food philosophy, it reminds me of when I was a little kid, and my mother shopped in the small neighbourhood stores, the mom and pop’s. There is the same sense of quality and confidence in knowing who you are dealing with. Can’t beat the convenience either, It’s open six days a week, located between a parking lot and a bus stop with coffee on the corner; that 4th st location is becoming a happening place.”
From Jean Dugal. (Fellow contributor @ the Island Word)
PS: In the spirit of keeping things hyperlocal, CP-SMS will be asking like-minded community members to submit their 2 cents.
Willingness to accept cw$ could open discussions for payment.

The Keeping it Living Estuary Art Exhibit and Silent Auction Opening – tonight @ Zocalos!
Posted by admin in Comox Valley, Keeping It Living, Social Media Solutions on 06/05/2010
We invite you to the Keeping it Living Estuary Art Exhibit and Silent Auction Opening.
This event will take place on Thursday May 6th from 7-10pm at Zocalo Cafe and Gallery on the corner of 5th and Cliff.
We will be celebrating the beauty and diversity of the Arts, the Estuary and our Community in the Comox Valley. The evening will start with a short presentation from Project Watershed on the Courtenay River Estuary – its importance, uniqueness and the activities occurring on and around it. This will be followed by a musical performance by Joanna Finch. Finger foods will be available.
Artists have been submitting works into the silent auction since September and now it’s your chance to see what they have created. A portion of the funds raised by this auction will go to Project Watershed to help preserve and restore the estuary; giving you the opportunity to invest in the arts and the beauty of our natural environment.
The estuary inspired art will be on display at Zocalo, Carderos, Blue Heron Books, Otter’s Kitchen Cove and Seeds Food Market from May 6th to 27th. This month long exhibit will include a benefit concert with Doug Cox, Todd Butler and friends at Zocalos on the 13th and the grand finale – a Gala Gathering at Courtenay and District Fish and Game Hall on the 29th. Come and enjoy the artwork, music and a glass of wine with the artists, friends and neighbours.
RSVP to the event on Facebook.

Cannabis for Health Forum
Posted by admin in Comox Valley, Imagine Comox Valley, Social Media Solutions on 19/04/2010
The North Island Compassion Club (NICC) is holding a Cannabis for Health Forum on Sunday April 25, 1-4pm at the Florence Filberg Centre in Courtenay. Admission by donation (CDN$ and cw$) or free.
Presenters include Ted Smith and Gayle Qin from the Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Canada, based in Victoria; Mik Mann, a licensed grower and Marijuana Access Regulations Advocate; a panel of NICC members; and plenty of time for questions and discussion.
According to the Canadian Government website, “Health Canada grants access to marihuana for medical use to those who are suffering from grave and debilitating illnesses” such as chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, cancer, epilepsy, HIV/AIDS. Since the program covers fewer than 4,000 people in Canada, many use compassion clubs and friends to secure good, clean cannabis.
Although smoking is the preferred method for immediate relief, there are many other ways to use cannabis as edibles, oils, salves, & balms. Ted and Gayle have developed 29 edible and skin products that are now available through NICC and their recipes are available at http://www.cbc-canada.ca/recipes/cbcoc-official-recipe-book
To join NICC and purchase cannabis products requires proof of medical/therapeutic condition. For more information, see the Cannabis for Health Facebook group or phone 250 871 5207.
