LUSH Valley – Fruit Tree Program Kickoff

LUSH Valley Food Action Society invites everyone to join them for the kickoff of their annual Fruit Tree Program.

Date: Saturday, 24 July

Time: 1 – 3 pm

Venue: The LUSH Hub (1126 Piercy Avenue – heading away from Courtenay along 8th Street, turn right into Piercy after the Thrift Store, opposite the Coffee Love Bug.

New participants are warmly welcome to join the 2010 Fruit Tree Team. The Fruit Tree Program coordinates the harvesting of fresh healthy fruit which is shared between volunteer pickers, fruit owners and community agencies providing support to people in need. This year, we have also planned a big thank you to all the fruit tree owners, pickers and other volunteers who have participated since the program began in 2002. Come on down for some fun!

Vancouver Island MusicFest 2010

Armed with backstage passes, newly printed T-shirts and 2 working laptops CP-SMS rolled into this year’s Vancouver Island MusicFest to try and capture some commentary from performers, crew and volunteers as part of the media crew. The idea of having real-time commentary from the festival posted to YouTube was an exciting opportunity to gain some further experience with this particular social media element, content for our channel and to be involved with a Comox Valley event as fun and funky as MusicFest.

One of the best aspects of the festival, apart from amazing acts like Joan Osborne and the group of performers that presented Human Voices on the Grierson Stage, is the people you meet. CP-SMS was very impressed with the efforts of photographers Ron Pogue (have a look at his album on Facebook) and Sarah Kerr (see her album on Facebook).

It was nice to run into Erin Haluschak, Comox Valley record photographer and reporter, as well. Have a look at some of the pics she images she managed to capture this past weekend:

Big thanks to the Comox Valley Kickers for stepping up and taking care of campground security. Looking forward to being more involved with the team and the stuff they get up to.

Wish there was more time to spend with Jade De Trey of Methuselah (www.dancwithjade.ca) but it was a fitting end to a spectacular festival to do some lush lounging with Miss Christina and Robin, who dances with her in the group. Thanks ladies.

Lastly, thanks to Meaghan Cursons, Bethany Scott, Sue Moen and the rest of the people who worked to so hard to make it such a success

“When the rains fall hard and heavy I dream they discharge the dog shit, in those cute little compost-able bags, into the estuary at last, ’cause the shit stink sure is overpowering on a beautiful,warm sunny day. Isn’t that why people throw it toward the estuary water, isn’t that their hope/assumption? That it will sink down and away? Enough wrist action, it might hit water, or maybe just mud, rock, wood, brambles; but once it leaves the hand it is away. Even though we are all so fucking sophisticated that we know there really is no such place as away. It’s the best we can do I suppose, in this pinnacle of civilization, this Comox Valley hopping as it is with social media, and the 3C cool factor of Cumberland/Courtenay/Comox. We trail after our pampered pooches, harvesting their precious feces to keep the walkways clean, but do we bury it? Do we compost it? No. We’ll protest development along the shoreline, protest a gas station on the dyke, but in the end it all comes down to the same thing, throwing our unwanted shit in the water.”

Assistant GIS/ GPS Technician
Assistant Volunteer Co-ordinator
Candidates for these positions must meet EI eligibility requirements. These positions are supported by a Ministry of Housing and Social Development Job Creation Partnership Grant.
A valid drivers license is required.
Application deadline is June 24, 2010. To request a referral contact the Job Shop and set up an appointment with a Career Advisor (250) 334-3119.
